Signs your wisdom teeth might need to come out

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. Here's what we look for when assessing whether extraction is the right call.

Pain at the back of your mouth

Persistent aching or sharp pain near your back molars is often the first sign that a wisdom tooth is emerging at the wrong angle or without enough space.

Swollen or bleeding gums

Inflamed gum tissue around a partially erupted wisdom tooth is a breeding ground for bacteria and infection — and it usually won't resolve on its own.

Crowding of other teeth

Wisdom teeth pushing against your existing teeth can undo years of orthodontic work and shift your bite — often without any pain until significant movement has already occurred.

Recurring jaw stiffness

Difficulty fully opening your mouth or jaw stiffness that won't go away can indicate a wisdom tooth causing pressure on surrounding structures.

Decay on a hard-to-reach tooth

Wisdom teeth are notoriously difficult to clean properly. If one has already developed decay that can't be treated effectively, removal is often the most sensible option.

Your dentist can see it on X-ray

Sometimes there are no symptoms at all — but an X-ray shows an impacted wisdom tooth that will become a problem if left in place. Early removal is always simpler than emergency removal.

What happens during wisdom tooth removal

Here's exactly what to expect from assessment to recovery — no surprises.

1

Assessment & X-rays

We take digital X-rays to understand the position, angle and root structure of your wisdom teeth before recommending anything.

2

Clear treatment recommendation

We explain what we found, whether removal is necessary and what the procedure involves — including cost and recovery time — before you decide.

3

Anaesthetic & preparation

We administer local anaesthetic carefully and wait until you're fully numb before starting. You won't feel pain — just some pressure.

4

Removal

The extraction itself is typically straightforward. For impacted teeth we may need to section the tooth — but we'll explain this beforehand if that's the case.

5

Recovery guidance

We send you home with clear written aftercare instructions and our contact details — so you're never left wondering if something is normal during recovery.

Aftercare — what to do and what to avoid

A smooth recovery is mostly about the first 48–72 hours. Here's what matters most.

✅ Do this

Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes after the procedure. Take prescribed pain relief before the anaesthetic wears off. Eat soft foods for 48 hours. Rinse gently with warm salt water from the next day. Rest and avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours.

❌ Avoid this

Don't smoke, drink alcohol or use a straw for at least 48 hours — these disrupt the clot that's essential for healing. Avoid hard, crunchy or very hot foods. Don't poke the socket with your tongue or fingers.

Common questions about wisdom tooth removal

The questions we hear most from Gold Coast patients before their procedure.

During the procedure — no. You'll feel pressure but not pain. Afterwards there's typically some soreness for 2–4 days that's well managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most people are back to normal within a week.
No. If your wisdom teeth have fully erupted, are properly positioned and can be cleaned effectively, there may be no reason to remove them. We'll assess yours and give you an honest recommendation.
Most people feel comfortable within 3–5 days. Full healing of the socket takes 4–6 weeks, but you won't notice this during normal daily life after the first week.
Often yes — getting them all done in one visit means one recovery period instead of four. We'll advise whether this is the right approach for your specific case based on the position and complexity of each tooth.
